Via Urdu from Persian zamīndār, from zamīn ‘land’ + -dār ‘holder’.

Use In Sentences:

  • My friend’s father is a zamindar.
  • The bank has sanctioned a loan for the local zamindars.
  • The zamindari system obtains throughout northern and central India, and also in the permanently settled estates of Madras.

  1. A word which most of the Indians are familiar with, isn’t it? 🙂

    1. Yea… Initially I had no clue it was an English word (despite having come across it several times in sixth grade history book.) I thought of it as more of a Hindi word (zamin and all) so as soon as I saw it listed in the English dictionary, I decided to have it for WOW 🙂
